The Heat Is On: Media Coverage of BB15 Bigotry and Hate

In our weekend Big Brother 15 live feeds highlight post, we briefly touched on some of the discriminatory comments made by several houseguests (GinaMarie and Aaryn being the biggest offenders) over the weekend. The houseguest have not stopped spewing the hate since then despite warning from Big Brother.

The Heat Is On: Media Coverage of BB15 Bigotry and HateIt would take me hours to recite each event. I do not have the time nor stomach to do that. Thankfully several Big Brother and Reality sites have done this for us. The coverage is reading major news outlets.

Reality and Big Brother Sites Coverage

Reality Blurred: Big Brother already a cesspool of racist, homophobic, and misogynistic comments

NPR: ‘Big Brother’ Isn’t Just A Terrible Show, It’s A Wasted Opportunity

Today.com: ‘Big Brother’ rocked by big controversy: Racism, sexism and homophobia

I think it is important to not all the houseguests have participated in this behavior. Some, like McCrae and Elissa have voiced their displeasure upon hearing it in their presence.

I know the name of this site is “I Hate Big Brother”, but that is just a tongue in cheek name, as we are huge fans of this show. We are disturbed in sadden by what is taking place. We are all for free speech, but it sucks to see this show used a conduit for such hate.  We would love to hear your take in the comments.

I’m glad to see that major media outlets like huff post are picking this up. Hopefully it puts pressure on the producers to do something about it. I just don’t know how much I can take. And i m not sure I want to watch the show anymore. I’m trying to wait and see tho how these next few episodes go and if they will address it. I know they won’t kick out 3-4 HGs. That would put the season in jeopardy if that happened. And that would suck because I am a bb fan and I do love the show. But if the producers decide to sweep it under the rug or not air the footage with the comments in questions, I don’t see how I can continue to watch the season.

I can not get over how disappointing these peoples mouths are and I love BB I have watched each season and have a had the live feeds most years… I can not believe how prejudice they are.. I am very glad none of these offenders are my children !!!

I hold out hope that soon they can get back to the game and stop the school yard bullying.

  5. Pat July 1, 2013 at 9:09 pm #

I think all these nasty mouth people should be kicked to the curb ASAP, cannot deal with alot of racist women. BB needs to regroup with some real redneck women up here against these little high class bleached blonds.

  6. denise olkoski July 1, 2013 at 9:13 pm #

I have watched bb every year, it is my favorite. If something is not done about what is going on in the house, I am cancelling my feeds and I will get a refund. This is not about prejudice and sex. This is not about you letting certain ones get away with breaking the rules. I have BB parties every Sunday night , there is about 12 of us. I know you can probably afford to lose us, and that’s fine, but our teenagers like it too. Now they can’t watch the feeds because you have people screwing their brains out and acting like these prejudice offenders calling people names and screaming and using the f*** work every other word is ok. Sorry BB you have really lowered your standards this year and they are not for me. Do something or we are gone.

Everyone does have the right to free speech, But these houseguest are paid by CBS and under contract. Essentially they are employees of CBS. Any other employer would have terminated their employees if they had used racial or homophobic comments and were caught. Well these houseguest have been caught repeatedly and they continue to break the rules. This should make the contracts void. CBS should terminate their contracts and replace the houseguest. But do not be naïve CBS loving every minute of this!!!

That’s what we get when BB decides to cast people who are in the entertainment industry. They are so worried about physical appearance. I have been saying for the last 10 seasons that they should cast regular, real people. I don’t understand why they continue to cast all these people who are models and actors or “bartenders to the stars.” Give us some people that we can relate to. This behavior has me sickened. I LOVE this show, and I’ve watched every single show of every season. I plan my summers around BB. I really feel like I’m getting cheated this season. I can only tolerate about 6 of the houseguests this season and that’s really sad. This had gone from my favorite show to an embarrassment in a matter of days.

  10. AN AMERICAN (with freedom of speech) July 1, 2013 at 9:32 pm #

OMG! Get over it.They are words. If words in the english language offend you so much then maybe we should outlaw them so no one can speak their mind or talk about anything. What offends me is people making a big deal about words.your poor virgin ears should be covered so no one offends them (boohoo).People use those kind of words for shock value and apparently it works, they are all over the media now.please shut up so it will stop being such a big deal and then maybe we can all start getting along with out all the little minds being offended.

  11. Jean Doucet July 1, 2013 at 9:33 pm #

I haven’t heard the racist remarks, but am so disappointed and upset at the vulgar language this group is using. They know they are being watched by millions of people and yet are swearing constantly showing no consideration for the viewers. To now learn that it goes way beyond into racist remarks and hatred is simply unacceptable. I’m a huge fan of Big Brother and so I hope that things can be controlled so we can once again find pleasure in watching such a wonderful show. It really goes to show that there are parents out there failing to teach their children what class and etiquette are.

Bad publicity is better than no publicity?????

  13. grovano July 1, 2013 at 10:00 pm #

Disgusting…I have been a fan of BB every year, and I am APPALED that these comments have been made and that CBS has allowed these disgusting, hateful people to remain in the house. SHAME ON THEM ALL !!!! When they are gone I might reconsider watching again. Julie if you play along with this trash it will destroy your reputation and career.

  14. Dee July 1, 2013 at 10:05 pm #

Oh, finally! I made a lot of noise via email and DIRECTLY calling CBS and the producers of Big Brother a couple of years back when that blonde idiot Dick Donato’s daughter kept making very rude comments about folks with Down Syndrome, literally comparing them to her pet DOG! and repeatedly no less. Once when one of the other houseguests tripped on the way out of the house to the backyard, she stated something to the effect “What are you, Down Syndrome?” Yes, seriously and the use of the word “retard” continually spewing out of her disgusting mouth was more than I could stand and no one did ANYTHING!!!! I stopped watching and wished I didn’t order the live feeds already but I did. Well, guess what? I haven’t ordered them since and I won’t. So, believe me, this year doesn’t corner the market on their rude, crude, disgusting, arrogant comments.

  15. Kim July 1, 2013 at 10:06 pm #

I think everyone needs to shut up and get over it! They are real people with real opinions and surprise, not everyone follows the stupid “politically correct” leftist agenda. Guess what….not everyone is a victim and the double standards of those so called victims is absolutely ridiculous! People need to get their feelings off of their shoulders and suck it up!

  16. bababooey July 1, 2013 at 10:18 pm #

you all need to get a life and stop contributing to these assholes 15 min. of fame

  17. Maurice July 1, 2013 at 10:40 pm #

I don’t think these house guests should be kicked out, but what they are saying should be included in the televised show to let the viewers see these people for who they are. Julie Chen should call out GM for her comment about straightening Helen’s eyes.

I do enjoy the show and watch every season, but wish the cast would NOT be selected using the normal format of one African American (two if they have a male & female), one Asian if any, and one gay (exception being the season they had exes). I’m surprised they are no Hispanics this season, what happened there?. Sure the show has it’s regular loyal fans, but it wouldn’t it appeal to more if the ethnic ratio was even? There one HG over 32 yrs old this season, what was up with that?

  18. LedsTide69 July 1, 2013 at 10:50 pm #

As a Veteran of 3 tours to Iraq, I fought for their & your right to FREE SPEECH! It is not hate speech, they are not threatening anyone or causing any ‘harm’ to a person. All the ‘Political Correctness’ Leftist crap makes me sick! If most of you people actually left your computer & lived, worked, fought in the ‘Real World’ your would do what most of us sane people ar saying about these HG, they are dumb kids & their parents did a crappy job on showing respect to others & they need a good ole fashion spanking! But I am sure most of you ‘entitled’ people on here think that spanking your child is wrong! So it won’t change. Also if you don’t like the type of language they use, cut the damn computer OFF!

  19. wildrose July 1, 2013 at 10:50 pm #

It amazes me how people think degrading others is okay….what disgusting idiots you are…

  20. FreeSpeech July 1, 2013 at 11:06 pm #

This show would be horrible if they were forced to be politically correct. Nobody would subscribe to boring, watered down feeds. I am not condoning or bashing any of the things people have said on this season. Simply saying they are being themselves; you don’t have to like or agree with what they say or do on the show. If CBS starting forcing people to not “be themselves” on the feeds; they would lose subscribers rapidly.

  21. MsKittyCat July 1, 2013 at 11:11 pm #

This season the people here are so young and spoiled. They care only about hooking up for a “shomance”…..they just dont get it. They should be asked to leave and BB needs to stick to their guns on this sad matter. Especially with all the negative BS about Paula Dean.

  22. BBCin July 1, 2013 at 11:19 pm #

The producers need to buckle down and quickly. If they care about their show and their fan base, they need to let the offenders know that this will not be tolerated and HG’s will be removed from the show immediately. Zero tolerance.

  23. DSB July 1, 2013 at 11:38 pm #

So CBS did a crappy job of casting this year…. & that’s life! I would be more disappointed if yet another “reality” show was (dare I say)- scripted. They are ignorant spoiled kids which is the most disappointing. CBS used to have a great mix of people & that’s gone now… Simply a ratings game. That is why nothing will be done about it- look at all the attention the show is getting! I am pissed I am even wasting my time writing or responding to the matter.

  24. stop crying July 1, 2013 at 11:55 pm #

seriously, this is whats wrong with our country today. everyone is crying like babies because someone is speaking their opinions on on a reality show. if you want to have thoughts and opinions regulated then move to korea or china

  25. NoMoreBB July 2, 2013 at 12:15 am #

For the Oh so Kind Hearted persons that keep try to sweep this under the “Freedom of Speech” rug!

Kids in JR & High schools all over this nation have to listen to kids like these very young “Adults” spewing their racist…homophobic…hateful…& sexually degrading verbal CRAP!…Everyday!!

Kids that when told over and over again how worthless they are, end up taking their lives or the lives of other!!!

GET THIS THROUGH YOUR VERY THICK CARELESS HEADS!….WORDS HAVE STARTED WARS!…WORDS HAVE TAKEN LIVES!!…WORDS OF HATE CAN DESTROY A PERSONS SOUL!!!

It may seem stupid to you who think this is all just silly talk and “Just Get Over It!!”….But then I guess no one has ever spoken to you or about you in such an ugly manner….Lucky you!

Maybe if it was Howard saying overly sexual things about the ladies…calling them Bitches and Whores…that need to service him…and other ugly things…maybe then you would have a problem?

  26. JGS July 2, 2013 at 12:29 am #

My feeling is that producers should immediately straight up confront the involved house guests, tell them this is their final warning, next step if any questionable comments occur is expulsion from game and full exposure to the viewers the comments that were said and reason for expulsion. This shows BB will not tolerate these kinds of hate comments.
We have had many summers of BB and have not had to listen to this type of behavior before. It is in no way acceptable to us viewers and would trust CBS to protect innocent house guests from this despicable behavior.

  27. bbfan July 2, 2013 at 12:33 am #

Am I missing something here? I watch BB every summer. Since when has there not! Been cussing and bad language. And since its not on show time it’s all bleeped out anyways. If anything it’s annoying because you miss whole sentences because if it. As far as racial slurs the more you complain the more power you give the words. Who cares

  28. Pat July 2, 2013 at 1:06 am #

Kick the offending children out. Their parent’s must be soooooo proud of what they have produced.
BB needs to scan the backgrounds of contestents.

  29. Karen Sheeley July 2, 2013 at 9:57 am #

Everyone of those girls should be kicked off the show and replaced with someone else.BB is not on the air to promote racism. They have been warned repeatedly yet they continue on with their trashy mouths. It is not alright and totally UNACCEPTABLE!They should be called into the diary room together and they should be told to pack their shit because they are leaving. That should have been done like yesterday.Imagine how that girls family feels hearing all this racist shit.smdh

  30. Karen Sheeley July 2, 2013 at 10:06 am #

@stop crying, you’re as ignorant as the dumb little twits on BB

  31. kondor July 2, 2013 at 1:18 pm #

If people are offended by this behavior and cannot tolerate it or separate it from the game, then they should simply stop watching.

While I am offended by the comments and behavior, I am a big boy and can separate it from the rest of the game and ignore it. I am a firm believer in what comes around goes around and these people are going to get what they deserve once the game is over.

Can BB do better for Season 16? Sure, they can try and screen people better. But at the end of the day we need to remember that we are watching “real” people that while they have been screened and vetted to a degree, are still representative of the country we live in.

Reality is reality. You are getting exactly what you asked for, like it or not, offensive or not. No amount of changing the game to accommodate the people who are clamoring for heads to roll can change that.

  32. Erik July 2, 2013 at 3:03 pm #

These girls are pretty, so why the hate unless they say the N word which would be unforgivable. This shows how most people are in real life but they are afraid to about it (ignorant). All in the Family is still one of the best comedies ever & that’s extremely racist. Tom & Jerry is also racist & many others. So What!!! Be Yourself is the Way to go in Life & Learn to be Happy. Stop Being so PC in This Stupid Generation & Enjoy Life. Humor is Killed by People under 40, What a Shame. Enjoy These Beautiful & Sexy Women of BB15. Bye

  33. TG July 2, 2013 at 8:38 pm #

Seriously, everyone who wants these people off the air, or wants the producers to have a talk with them, are idiots. This is a REALITY show, and guess what? These people are being REAL. Racism sucks, but it exists in reality. And when you put racist people on a TV show, especially a REALity show, you’re going to get REALity. Stop whining.

  34. patsy ann July 2, 2013 at 10:43 pm #

I have one thing to say and that is stop the racism and if it does not happen. there will be so much trouble for all involved. I would be so careful. you can see what is happening to Paula Deem the cooking lady. why do they not see that when they do this it is so hateful and hurtful.
I can’t deal with this kind of thing and there are many like me. you can have a good show with out it.

  35. Donna July 3, 2013 at 10:13 am #

I’ve watched Big Brother from its inception. Each year the morals and values have progressively dropped. This year it has it an reached an all time low. The comments and actions of a few of the BB guests have become, for me, unacceptable.

Paula Deen has been crucified for using a degrogatory term. She has lost her business and good name. She has admitted her error and asked for forgiviness. These young people appear to have no remorse in their thoughts and actions. I find that beyond reprehensible.
My comment sent to CBS this morning:

As CBS, it appears to me you condone their words and actions. Stand up for decency! Do the right thing and clear those who are offensive from the show. When in the “real world” behavior such as this, is unacceptable. Allison Grodner has sunk to a new level.

I will officially do as most will suggest, I will turn to another channel.

    Respectfully,

    DTC

Freedom of speech, I may not agree with what you say, but I defend your right to say it. Isn’t this a 2nd amendment right?

  39. Debbie July 5, 2013 at 5:13 pm #

What would be appropriate as Big Brother is all about the vote, they should allow America the chance to vote on “should they stay or should they go.” Also Aaryon did admit to using her hand to hold the extra sauce during the HoH competition on Big Brother After Dark. Cheating??? I just re-watched it to make sure I heard it right.
